DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PURSER (CATERING)

111. The duties of the Purser (C) fall under the following three main heads :-
Hotel Services
Passengers
Bureau(x)

112. Hotel Services: The Purser (C) is responsible to the Commander for the general management and efficient running of the " Hotel Services " on board, with particular reference to :-

(a)

The cleanliness and orderliness of all Cabins, Public Rooms, Lavatories, Bathrooms, Alley- ways. He will ensure in conjunction with the Chief Engineer Officer or the Chief Officer, that lights, fans, heating, and ventilation are in working order.

(b)

The care and maintenance of all furniture, furnishing, bedding, linen, tableware, crockery, glassware, galley/pantry utensils and other domestic equipment.

(c)

The orderliness and sanitary condition of galleys, pantries, storerooms, domestic refrigerated chambers, etc., and the satisfactory condition and functioning of all mechanical equipment in these spaces, with the assistance of the Deck or the Engineroom Department as may be required.

(d)

The correct turnout, discipline, behaviour and attention to duty of all members of the Saloon Crew ; their efficient deployment to ensure the high standard of service required without incurring unnecessary overtime, and the cleanliness of their quarters.

(e)

The efficient operation and use of the Bars, Ship's Shop. Canteens, Laundry, Cinema and Orchestra (as applicable).

(f)

The indenting, receiving on board (after due checking), stowage and issue of all provision, Bar, Canteen, Shop (where applicable) and equipment stores.
The strictest attention is to be paid to the care and safe custody of these stores and constant vigilance exercised to ensure their correct use in order to minimise waste and avoid losses.

(g)

The satisfactory messing of the ship's company and all passengers dining in Saloons, Cafeterias, and Canteens. The Company's Instructions on the standards to be maintained will be closely observed.

(h)

He will he present at the Commander's Inspections.

113. Passengers : The Purser (C) is responsible for ensuring that the Company's high standard of service to passengers is maintained. In particular he must ensure that :-

(a)

Prior to embarkation everything is in readiness in Cabins and Public Rooms for the reception of passengers and that all Saloon staff are in attendance, ready to assist, as required.

(b)

Passengers are made as comfortable as possible in their accommodation and that mechanical defects in Cabin equipment (such as light and fan failures, faulty plumbing, ventilation, etc.), when they occur, are promptly rectified.

(c)

Passengers' enquiries, comments, and criticisms are dealt with willingly, courteously, and efficiently.

114. Bureau : The Purser (C) is responsible for the efficient operation of the Bureau which handles the ship's office work relating to documentation, accounts, and correspondence, and also provides a service to passengers requiring advice and assistance. Special attention will be paid to the following :-

(a)

The safe custody of the ship's papers, e.g., Register, Load Line, Passenger and Suez Canal Certificates,- European and Asian Articles, Port Clearance and such other documents as the Commander may entrust to his care.

(b)

The accurate compilation of all documents, accounts, passenger manifests, crew lists, etc., as required by Head Office, Customs, Port Authorities and Operating Agents.

(c)

The safe custody of all cash and valuables belonging to the Company and/or passengers entrusted to his care and ensuring that strict security measures are maintained in his department in accordance with separate instructions issued by the Company.
The ship's "Cash Book" recording all cash transactions will be maintained on a day-to-day basis without fail.

(d)

Close attention must be paid to the Company's instructions regarding foreign currencies.

(e)

When a Ship's Surgeon is not carried, the Purser will he responsible for collecting all ship's Health Certificates; he will maintain a record showing the dates of expiry of such Certificates, and bring to the Commander's notice any which require renewal.

(f)

He will obtain from all Government passengers, and forward under a covering letter to Agents at the port of embarkation at the termination of a voyage, a Certificate, completed in detail and signed as necessary, stating the ports of embarkation and disembarkation and the accommodation provided.
