Ayton Cross tug build

The Build Overview

Here are all the pages I've put together to show the progress I am making with my build of the Ayton Cross. You can access them all from this page, via the menu bar or sequentially from each build page.

Introduction

The kit is ordered from Mobile Marine Models on 21st November 2019.
It arrived on 19th December 2019, and contents examined.

The Hull - 1

Preparation

Basic Hull Preparation.
Remove the mould line, sand the hull to remove gloss.
Level up all the edges and sand to an even finish.

Propshaft Fitting

Measure carefully and mark where to cut the holes in the hull.
Cut the holes and file to exact size.

Bow Thruster

Measure carefully and mark where to cut the holes in the hull.
Cut the holes and file so that the transverse tube fits neatly.

Fitting the Motor

Prepare the motor mount board.
Prepare the motor securing brackets.
Line up the motors.
Fix in place on the board.

The Hull - 2

More Preparation

More Hull Preparation.
Fill and sand hull blemishes.
Fit support strips under bulwark for bulwark liner.
Line inside of bulwarks with 1mm styrene sheet.
Trim back to gunwhales and mark with deck line.

Bow Thruster

Tack the tube in place, check alignment and then epoxy firmly to the hull.
Trim the tubes back to to the hull and fair off.

Anchor Recess

Cut holes in the hull.
Build anchor recess modules.
Tack in place and then epoxy to hull.

The Hull - 3

Kort Nozzle Fitting

Tack the rudder tube in place, check alignment and then epoxy tube brace to the hull.

Propshaft Fitting

Fit Propshaft and align with kort nozzle, p-frame and motors.

Fitting the Motors

Align the motor mount board with the propshaft using Protoralign.
Fix the board to the hull.

Rudder Servo Mount

Cut out the servo mount parts.
Assemble the servo mount.
Cut out servo mount deck and epoxy firmly to the hull.
Fit servo to the mount.
Fix in place in to the hull.

Fit propellers

Fit propellers and check rotation direction and clearance.

The Hull Finish

Lower Hull

Lower Hull sanded, primed and several light coats of Red Oxide.

Upper Hull

Rubbing Stakes and Freeing Ports masked, upper hull primed in grey and a couple of coats of blue.

Electrics - 1

Electrics Diagram

Battery Box/Wiring Board

Assemble and fix in place the box and board to hold 2 x 12v batteries and control components
Connect batteries to charging socket, switch and power distribution board.
Modify rear battery box to lower battery.

The Deck - 1

Deck Support Beams

The decks fit onto the deck support beams that are fitted around the hull to the bulwark liner.

Deck Stringers

The stringers are fitted across the boat from side to side.

Fo'c'sle Deck

The fo'c'sle deck is fitted onto support beams and stringers.

Main Deck

The main deck fits onto support beams and stringers.

Side Decks and Coaming

The coaming allows access to the hull and prevents the ingress of water from the deck.
