THE CADETS MANUAL

INTRODUCTION

The first manual for Deck Cadets serving in the British India Steam Navigation Company was compiled by the late Captain J.V. Reilly and was published in 1919. Its object was to assist Cadets appointed to the two Cadet ships of the day and whilst it was not intended to be a complete guide it did contain certain details of duty and routine which have been excluded from this present work.

The object of the present manual is to assist Cadets, on joining the Company, to appreciate what will be demanded of them in their training, whichever type of vessel they may serve in. It also includes the syllabuses for training compiled by the Merchant Navy Training Board to whom the Company make full acknowledgement for permission to include in this manual. The syllabuses will form the basis upon which all Cadet training will be directed throughout the Company's fleet. The correspondence courses compiled by King Edward VII Nautical College with which you will be enrolled as necessary and the Merchant Navy Training Board's annual examinations are closely related to these syllabuses so that they should studies in some detail.
